Hello,
I'm currently a junior in high school and am now signing up for classes for my senior year. I have been debating with myself on what to take, so I decided to see what some admissions offices advise. When I go to college, I plan to double major in biochemistry/molecular biology and something in design/art.
Where my conflict comes up is whether or not to take another semester of a social studies because currently I have 2.5 units of social studies, while many colleges recommend/require 3. But, I feel that I could take AP Enviornmental Science, the only AP science class I haven't taken. My question is what you believe is the most important in a schedule - maxing out on all classes in a given subject of interest, or taking the recommended classes.
Thank you for your time.

Dear Professor Robert Pruitt,
I am currently a high school junior extremely interested in pursuing a path of biochemistry and/or molecular genetics. In the past month I have been researching basic Mendelian genetic principles so I can tie my larger chemistry knowledge with the genetics to further understand molecular genetics. Your experiments with the Arabidopsis, that 10% of offspring "correct" the genetic mutation they receive from their flawed parents and grow like their unflawed grandparents, is extremely intriguing in that they "break" Mendelian rules. The idea that the mechanism for recovering the normal DNA might be in the RNA is unbelievable. Have your experiments been tested elsewhere to reveal similar results?
I was specifically wondering if you could suggest a few books to help me further discover the area of biochemistry/molecular biology, if possible covering genetic theories that could connect with your Arabidopsis experiments. I hope to attend a 7-week long science summer research camp at Michigan State University, so I'm trying to gather information in preparation for my research.
Thank you for your time.

Hi Dr. Triemer,
I've finished sending all I can down for sequencing for both L. fusca and L. spirogyroides. I've started to get sequences back and I've begun aligning them. Do you have in mind what organism you'd like me to do next? I think you know already, but the rpoA gene hasn't been working. We've tried variations to the PCR setup but we still get extremely faint bands, if any at all.
Anyway, I've been working on my powerpoint for my presentation next Tuesday at 10:00. Did you get the schedule of presentations? I'll let you know if any questions come up. Also, do you think next Monday I could give a mock presentation for practice? I'll definitely have the powerpoint done by this week, so perhaps we can look it over when need be.
Thanks!
